MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Down for Doughnuts in Mooresville is a family-owned business on a special mission — one inspired by the owners’ son, who has Down syndrome.

“When Zach was younger, he always wanted to go to work with his dad,” explains co-owner Lisa Cooper.
So, when her husband David had the opportunity to retire early from his banking career, the family used the opportunity to help Zach.

“He wanted to work, but we couldn’t find anybody that would hire him. And the same thing with his friends,” David said. “So that was our mission, to not only have a place for him and I to work, but to hire other individuals with disabilities.”

Down for Doughnuts is at 880 East Iredell Ave. in Mooresville. The shop is open from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, go to downfordoughnuts.com.
