CHARLOTTE — Cinco de Mayo is just a few days away.
Commonwealth Avenue in Plaza Midwood was packed over the weekend with people eager to feast on tacos and tequila, but the true meaning of the holiday is much deeper for the Latin-American community.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862. In celebration, the Cinco de Mayo festival returned to the streets of Plaza Midwood on Sunday -- this time, with a new concept.
“It’s important for us to show the diversity in our city,” said organizer Denise Coleman. “It’s important for us to show that the growth of the demographics in the Hispanic community has been increasing tremendously, and we’re all looking for ways to celebrate our cultural heritage.”
This year, there were bands, a dog costume contest, traditional Hispanic singing and storytelling for kids.
If you missed Plaza Midwood’s festival, don’t worry. There are more events happening this week to celebrate.
