Asheville’s Burial Brewery headed to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An Asheville brewery with a strong Charlotte following is coming to Plaza Midwood.

Burial Beer Co., which got its start as a one-barrel system in 2013, has acquired retail space on Thomas Avenue.

The property formerly occupied by Boris & Natasha and Stash Pad will be the new home for Burial’s Charlotte taproom and bottle shop.

The brewery’s co-founder and COO Doug Reiser said they selected the spot “because it enriched Burial’s commitment to preservation and keeping unique and historic buildings alive in developing areas, where they may otherwise be torn down and replaced.”

The taproom will include an indoor bar area, a secluded outdoor beer garden and a rooftop deck where customers can enjoy a curated variety of items from a select menu of sandwiches, charcuterie and other locally purveyed goods.

In addition to a variety of beer styles, such as hoppy ales, dessert stouts, barrel-aged sours, wild ales and rustic lagers, Burial offers wine, cider and vermouth.

Burial co-founder and CEO Jess Reiser said securing the Charlotte location feels surreal.

“To think we started as a one-barrel brewery and we now are expanding into the biggest metropolitan city in North Carolina, well, it makes me take a step back and really soak it all in,” she said.

“We are beyond excited to connect to the Charlotte community over a pint of beer at the new taproom,” she added.

Reiser told the Charlotte Business Journal they expect to open by the end of this year.
