Warm stretch of weather leads to slow start of ski season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The recent stretch of above average temperatures has it feeling more like October than December here in the Carolinas, and it may be affecting your typical winter activities.

Appalachian Ski Mountain is one business in North Carolina that has been directly impacted by the lingering fall weather.

Appalachian Ski was open six days earlier this season, and able to take advantage of 32 hours of snow making. But the recent warm weather and rain has put a damper on the start of their season.

Although the warm start has made for an unusual flow of visitors, president Brad Moretz is staying positive.

“Ski seasons are like snowflakes. They are all different,” said Moretz.

Mother Nature will be helping out efforts later this week as our next cold front passes through Thursday.

Snow will be possible Thursday night into Friday morning for the mountains, although accumulations look to stay under half of an inch.

Appalachian Ski, as well as other ski resorts in the region, will look to fire up the snow guns this weekend as temperatures drop into the 20s overnight -- prime weather conditions for making fresh powder.

Moretz said they hope to reopen on Sunday.

If you are heading up to the mountains this weekend for a taste of winter weather, expect highs in the 30s and 40s both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, with plenty of sunshine.
