A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for our entire area starting at 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday.

Forecast:

  • All is on track for the winter storm to impact our area today.
  • Snow already started falling this morning in the mountains.
  • Snow should start up this afternoon closer to Charlotte with some possible flakes before then.
  • The snow may come down heavily at first and this could make travel very difficult this afternoon.
  • A changeover to sleet and then freezing rain occurs into the evening and that will last until just after midnight.
  • Ice accumulation could lead to some power outages tonight, especially south.
  • Total accumulations for snow and sleet are 3-6″ for the mountains, 2-3″ for the northern foothills/I-40 corridor, 1-2″ around the metro (more on the north side, less on the south, and less than 1″ far south with more ice accumulation of ¼” possible).
  • Travel will remain difficult until the sun comes out tomorrow morning and temperatures get above freezing by about 10 a.m.
  • Dry and clear conditions for the remainder of the weekend.
  • We’ll be watching for a refreeze on Sunday morning.
