safe driving tips

Are you guilty of distracted driving? Most of us are, honestly. Whether you’re trying to deal with rowdy kids in the backseat, answering emails from behind the wheel, or trying to fit in a quick breakfast before you get to work, it’s easy to take attention away from the task at hand – driving your car. However, distracted driving is one of the most dangerous things you can do while behind the wheel of your N Charlotte Toyota. And since it’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we’re giving you a quick list of tips on how to break your bad habits and STOP engaging in distracted driving.

5 tips to help you break bad distracted driving habits

Tip #1: Put your phone away.

Your phone is one of the biggest distractions when you’re behind the wheel. Put it away – out of sight, out of mind. You can stash it in your center console or in your purse and turn it on silent so it doesn’t distract you. If you absolutely have to make a call, use the Bluetooth technology found in so many of our new N Charlotte Toyotas, or have a passenger send a text or email for you. Never use your phone when you’re in the driver’s seat!

Tip #2: Be aware of how you interact with passengers.

Think about how you’re interacting with your passengers. Are you turning to talk to them? Are you taking your eyes off the road or your hands off of the wheel? This counts as distracted driving. You can certainly talk to passengers, but keep your eyes on the road and don’t turn to speak to anyone. Additionally, you may want to limit the number of passengers (if you allow any) for new teen drivers to help them avoid bad habits.

Tip #3: Don’t eat behind the wheel.

It’s tempting to sleep in and have your breakfast behind the wheel, but don’t do it. Eating can be messy and requires you to use your hands… when they should be on the steering wheel. Pull over to eat, eat at home, eat when you get to your destination – anywhere but behind the wheel of your car.

Tip #4: Do your grooming at home.

You should also do your personal grooming at home. Brushing your hair, putting on makeup, shaving, tying your tie – all of these count as distracted driving habits because they take your eyes, hands, and focus off of driving your N Charlotte Toyota! Resist the urge to beautify when behind the wheel.

Tip #5: Get situated before you pull out of the driveway.

Before you leave the house, you should adjust your seat so you’re comfortable, fix your mirrors so you can see properly, and buckle your seatbelt. Do this before you even pull out of the driveway so you don’t have to fidget with anything when you’re actually out on the road.
