When was the last time you scheduled routine car care for your car tires? If you can't remember, it may be time to put in a call to our Charlotte Toyota service center. However, here's another question to ponder - when's the last time you checked out your spare tire? If you're like most drivers, it's been quite a while. In fact, the thought may not even cross your mind. Your spare is just as important as your other four tires, though, and you need to maintain it as such. Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips!
How should you care for your spare tire?
First things first, make sure your spare tire is in place! You should keep a fully inflated spare tire in your car’s trunk, as well as the tools you need to change it. This includes a jack and a lug wrench. You might also want to throw in a flashlight in case you find yourself changing your flat tire in the dark, as well as a towel or blanket to kneel on in case it’s wet outside. Next, check out the overall condition of your spare tire. Does it have any sidewall separation? Is the rubber in good condition, or is it dry and cracked? Are there any bubbles, bulges, or blisters that could cause a blowout? Your spare isn't meant to be driven long distances or at high speeds, but it should be in good enough condition to get you to a dealership or auto service center for a replacement.
It’s especially important to check the condition of your spare tire if it’s mounted on the exterior of the car. Tires mounted on the exterior are exposed to the elements, including rain, snow, and high temperatures, so they may degrade faster and should be checked for quality often. Finally, check the PSI. Is the tire fully inflated to the right PSI (which you can find in your owner’s manual)? Having a flat spare tire when you have a flat tire isn’t going to help anyone, so make sure it’s inflated and check it regularly to ensure there aren’t any air leaks. Let Toyota of N Charlotte help you be ready for anything
If your spare tire is in bad physical condition, get a replacement - it’s not worth the risk of it also going flat or blowing out while you’re driving. You could damage your vehicle and also run the risk of getting into an accident.
Luckily for you, Toyota of N Charlotte can help! We have trained Toyota service techs on deck who can inspect your spare, inflate it to the right PSI, and if need be, help you find a replacement. Next time you’re here for routine car maintenance ask them to take a peek.
