Are you heading to the shore this summer to make the most of the sunshine? You’re not alone! Tons of people head east when summer strikes to hit the sand. And if you’re lucky, you might be able to even find a beach that you can drive on so you don’t have to lug all of your gear across the sand. However, driving on the beach isn’t as simple as it seems and Toyota of N Charlotte is here with tips so you can make the most of it this summer.
N Charlotte Toyota tips for beach driving
Tip 1: Let some air out of your tires before you hit the sand
When you let air out of your tires, it makes them a little bit flatter and they have more surface area. This will help you get better traction on sand and also help prevent you from digging into loose sand and getting stuck. Just remember to add air back into your tires after driving on the beach - driving on pavement with under inflated tires leads to reduced fuel efficiency and the risk of a blowout.
Tip 2: Know the rules and regulations.
You can’t just drive on any beach - only certain locations allow it, so do your research. They also usually require an admission fee, so be sure you’re ready to pay when you arrive. And follow the speed limit and designated safety rules when driving on the beach.
Tip 3: Don’t overpack.
Pack light when you go to the beach, as more weight means you’re more likely to sink into the sand. Now isn’t the time to bring everything you own along with you - bring the essentials and always make sure every passenger has a seat with a seatbelt (no overloading).
Tip 4: Drive near the water but avoid driving in it
It’s fine to drive near the water when driving on the beach - in fact, this is a good spot to drive because the sand is often firmer and more packed, so you’re less likely to get stuck. However, avoid driving in the water. Not only can salt water damage your car, you’re also more likely to get stuck as the tide rolls in and the sand beneath it quickly turns to mud.
Tip 5: Pick your parking spot according to the tides
Speaking of the tides, keep an eye on them and pick your parking spot accordingly. You’d be surprised how fast the beach can fill with water as the tides rise! It’s always smart to park further up the beach in the dryer sand to avoid the water reaching your Toyota and you getting stuck trying to move it.
Tip 6: Don’t slam on the brakes or gas
Slamming on the brakes or gas means sudden, jerky movements. These types of movements make it easy for your wheels to dig into the sand and suddenly, you’re stuck. The same goes for making sharp, sudden turns. Keep all of your movements slow and steady when driving on the beach to avoid any issues.
