WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, N.C. — Few people are getting across the bridge to Wrightsville Beach because of the police checkpoint that’s set up.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday, no one is allowed beyond that point without a pass showing they live on the island or are helping a resident board up.

Business owners worked hard to batten down ahead of the storm.

"When the high tide hits and the storm surge comes through we expect some pretty high tide surges here," said business owner Christopher Parker.

County officials said they expect Dorian to come within 12 miles of the coast pacing winds of over 100 mph.
