CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A woman sleeping in a University City hotel told Eyewitness News she woke up to a bullet zipping just feet from her head.
The woman, who wanted to use only her last name, Johnson, said the incident happened at about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at the InTown Suites on Rocky River Road.
"We were woken up out of our sleep with a huge, loud bang," Johnson said.
She said a bullet was fired from the room next door and came through her wall less than a foot above her headboard. Her teenage daughter was also sleeping in the bed.
"It was just shocking to know a bullet came through the wall," the woman's daughter said.
It's unclear what exactly happened next door, but Johnson said she got lucky. She said she's a night owl and usually does work in her room in the early morning hours.
"If you were standing up, you definitely would have gotten shot," she said.
Johnson, who has stayed at the hotel for more than a year, said this is not the first time she has complained to hotel management about a need for more security. She said there is a courtesy officer there but he is not armed, and she thinks he needs to be.
Eyewitness News obtained crime statistics from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department that show police officers have been called to the hotel 35 times in the past three months for a variety of issues, including assaults.
Johnson said corporate management was very accommodating on Tuesday, providing another room and also giving her credit for part of her stay.
Eyewitness News called the local and corporate management offices of InTown Suites to find out more about the security in place but did not hear back before news time Tuesday.
