Woman Charged With Misdemeanor Child Abuse

GASTONIA, N.C.,None — A Grover mother was charged with child abuse Friday after police said she drove under the influence of drugs and alcohol with her 5-month-old son in the car.

Gastonia police said Tasha Yvonna Fortenberry, 25, drove from her home in Grover to a Kmart in Gastonia under the influence.

A Gastonia police officer said he witnessed Fortenberry nearly drop her child twice while inside the store. According to our newspaper partner, The Gaston Gazette, the officer said Fortenberry told him she had taken Xanax, smoked marijuana and drank beer before driving to the Kmart.

Fortenberry was charged with misdemeanor child abuse and booked in the Gaston County jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
