CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — State troopers investigated a crash Wednesday morning that left one person dead in Catawba County.

Officials said the wreck was reported around 10:30 a.m. on Sherrills Ford Road near Mount Pleasant Church Road.

Troopers said an early-1990s Mazda drifted off the roadway and overturned after hitting a culvert.

Highway Patrol identified the driver as Rhonda Gillian.

Two eyewitnesses who were outside building a duplex at the time of the crash told Channel 9 that the car flipped at least two times after driving off Sherrills Ford Road.

“She was just going and flipping,” witness Greg Harris said. “There wasn’t any slowing down. She hit the culvert, flipped over and it ejected her.”

Troopers said a woman was thrown from the vehicle. She died at the scene.

“I was to the car as soon as it hit the ground,” witness Josh Harris said. “I was already to the victim. And that shows you how fleeting life can be. It can be over that quick.”

No one else was in the car.

Troopers are trying to determine what caused her to drive off the road.

Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty was on the scene, follow him on Twitter for updates.
