Heritage Auctions recently sold a large hourglass prop that was used in “The Wizard of Oz,” according to a news release.

The 20-inch hourglass is used by the Wicked Witch of the West — played by Margaret Hamilton — when she tells Dorothy — played by Judy Garland — “You see that? That’s how much longer you’ve got to be alive! And it isn’t long, my pretty! It isn’t long! I can’t wait forever to get those shoes!”

The hourglass fetched $495,000 and was the top lot at the auction held Dec. 17.

More than 1,700 people bid on items including the robe Charlton Heston wore in “The Ten Commandments,” the striped jacket worn by Dick Van Dyke in “Mary Poppins,” and Herbie Volkswagen Beetle from “Herbie Goes Bananas.”

Two other costumes from “The Wizard of Oz” production — a test dress for Dorothy and an Emerald City jacket — were purchased and will be part of The Wizard of Oz Museum in Cape Canaveral, Florida, auction officials said.
