DIMMITT, Texas — One person was injured and thousands of cattle were lost during a fire at a dairy farm Tuesday night in Dimmitt, Texas.
In a news release, the Castro County Sheriff’s Office said fire crews from Dimmitt, Hart, and Narareth all responded to an explosion at the Southfork Dairy Farms about 11 miles southeast of Dimmitt, Texas.
When crews arrived, they found one person trapped inside. That person was located and was able to be removed from the building. The sheriff’s office said the person was taken to the hospital. Other dairy employees were accounted for, according to KCBD.
The Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera told KFDA that the fire spread to the building where the cattle are hauled before bringing them into the milking area and into a holding pen. Rivera said that this is partially why only so few cattle survived.
Around 18,000 cattle were lost during the fire, according to KFDA.
Fire crews remained at the scene at the dairy farm until around 11 p.m., the sheriff’s office said.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, according to KCBD.
