LAKE CITY, S.C. — A South Carolina police officer accused of drug possession while on duty has been fired after one week on the job, authorities said.
Kasey Gibbons, 33, was arrested Monday and charged with the unlawful possession of a schedule IV-controlled substance while on duty at the Lake City Police Department, Lake City Administrator Stephany Snowden told WPDE. According to authorities, Gibbons was found with two milligrams of Alprazolam, a prescription drug used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.
Gibbons had passed a pre-employment drug screening and was hired on Nov. 2, WBTW reported.
“The city has zero-tolerance when it comes to this type of activity as it is a brazen betrayal of public trust and places fellow officers in harm’s way,” Snowden was quoted in a Facebook post by the City of Lake City.
Gibbons was terminated and arrested, WPDE reported. She was taken to the Florence County Detention Center and was released Tuesday on a personal recognizance bond.
“The city is transparent, we identified the problem,” according to the Facebook post. “Ms. Gibbons was arrested and we are moving forward.”
