DETROIT — Automaker Hyundai announced it is recalling more than 215,000 sedans because a fuel hose issue that poses a risk of fires.
The recall covers 215,171 Hyundai Sonatas from 2013 and 2014, according to documents the automaker filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Hyundai said that the low pressure fuel hose connecting two fuel pumps may crack due to heat generated by the engine. Dealers will replace the hose for free.
Hyundai said it expects to send out notification letters to vehicle owners on July 5, at which point the cars can be taken to dealers to be repaired.
This is the second time most of the cars have been recalled. In 2020, the same sedans were recalled for the same problem, but in that recall, dealers inspected the hoses and replaced them only if they were damaged, The Associated Press reported. If they weren’t damaged, heat-resistant tape was installed. This time, the AP reports that all of the faulty hoses will be replaced.
In documents filed with NHTSA, Hyundai said there have been 138 reports of problems with the fuel hoses in the U.S., but no confirmed cases of crashes, fires or injuries.
