The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch.
The watch’s lithium-ion battery can overheat and potentially cause burns.
About one million watches were sold in the U.S. and another 693,000 were sold globally, the CPSC said.
The watch has a polyurethane band and a 1.4-inch color LCD screen.
The model number, FB503, is on the back of the watch near where the band is attached.
The following watches are covered by the recall:
Model | Color combination |
---|---|
Ionic FB503CPBU | Slate Blue/Burnt Orange |
Ionic FB503GYBK | Charcoal/Smoke Gray |
Ionic FB503WTGY | Blue Gray/Silver Gray |
Ionic FB503WTNV | Adidas edition, Ink Blue & Ice Gray/Silver Gray |
Watch owners are being told to stop using it and to contact Fitbit to return the device. They will get a $299 refund and a discount code for 40% off some Fitbit devices.
There have been more than 170 reports of the watches overheating and 118 reports of burn injuries. Two of the burns were third-degree while four were considered second-degree, according to the CPSC.
The watches were sold at various brick-and-mortar and online retailers from September 2017 through December 2021 for between $200 and $330. Ionic watches stopped production in 2020.
