Recall alert: 155K GE refrigerators recalled because handle can come off

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced the recall of more than 155,000 General Electric refrigerators.

The CPSC said the freezer handle can come off when someone tries to open the drawer, posing a fall hazard.

There have been 71 reports of the handle detaching with 37 people being hurt, three of whom had serious falls.

Six models of the GE-brand French door refrigerators all have bottom drawers and are made with fingerprint-resistant stainless steel.

They were made from February 2020 through August 2021 at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Best Buy and other stores nationwide and online. They retailed for between $1,900 and $2,500, depending on the model.

The brand, model and serial numbers can be found on a label on the top left side of the inside of the refrigerator compartment.

The following model numbers are part of the recall:

The serial numbers start with one of the following two-letter combinations:

• DR
• FR
• GR

• ZR
• AS
• DS
• FS
• GS
• HS
• LS
• MS

If your refrigerator is affected by the recall, you will be able to schedule a free in-home service call to have the mounting fasteners replaced. You can also call to receive instructions on how to use the freezer drawer safely until repairs can be done, the CPSC said.
