Authorities identified the people slain as 52-year-old Nicole Conners, 49-year-old Susan Karnatz, 35-year-old Mary Marshall, 29-year-old Gabriel Torres, and a 16-year-old boy whose name was not released. Police Chief Estella Patterson said Torres was an off-duty police officer who was on his way to work when he was killed.

Two other people were injured in the shooting. Officials identified them as 33-year-old Police Officer Casey Clark, who was treated for injuries and released from a hospital, and 59-year-old Marcielle Gardner, who remained in critical condition on Friday.

“There are several families in our community waking up this morning without their loved ones. We grieve for them today,” Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin said at a news conference. “Our prayers are also with those who are injured. You know, no one can imagine what they’re all going through, but please know, we as a community stand with you today.”

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting, which began on Thursday evening and continued for more than four hours.

Officers responded just before 5:15 p.m. Thursday to a call of a person shot near the 6000 block of Osprey Cove Drive. They took a suspect into custody just before 9:40 p.m.

Patterson on Friday call the crime scene “extensive,” adding that it stretched over 2 miles.

“We don’t have answers as to why this tragedy occurred,” Patterson said on Friday.
