The border between Texas and Arkansas didn’t stop the fish from falling on both sides of the line. Some fish were found in The Land of Opportunity, KHOU reported.
They were found in at least four locations in the Texas town, the Texarkana Gazette reported.
One woman in the Arkansas town said they had nearly two dozen fish in their yard, the newspaper reported.
The phenomenon is unusual but not unheard of, but normally happens when fish, frogs and other small animals are picked up either by an updraft or tornadic waterspouts, the National Geographic Society said.
But the National Weather Service said there were no weather systems were detected that could explain how it happened, KHOU reported.
Residents said there was a pop-up thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon that dropped hail along with the fish, the Gazette reported.
One person said the air smelled like a fish market or a dock along a lake.
