CANDOR, N.C. — An 11-year-old North Carolina boy is dead after an apparent accidental shooting in a Candor home, authorities said.
According to the Richmond County Daily Journal, the incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday as the boy, who was from Rockingham, was staying at his friend’s home in Candor’s Bell Acres Community. Montgomery County Sheriff Chris Watkins released a statement saying six children were in the home without adult supervision when a gun accidentally discharged, striking and killing the boy, the newspaper reported.
“The gun involved was in the home and had been left unsecure and was obtained by children,” the statement read.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, and no one has been charged in connection with the shooting, according to the newspaper. An autopsy will be performed on the boy, officials said.
