Minnesota Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer hit in face with 92 mph fastball, will need surgery

Minnesota Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer was injured on Wednesday when he was hit in the face with a 92 mph fastball.

Farmer, 32, a seven-year veteran who is playing his first season with the Twins, was hit by Chicago White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito during the fourth inning, the Star Tribune reported.

Farmer was scheduled for oral surgery to realign four teeth and repair a laceration around his jaw, according to The Associated Press.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters after Minnesota’s 3-1 victory that an initial diagnosis revealed no fractures.

“He’s going to have a procedure today to realign his teeth and fix a major laceration of the lower jaw,” Baldelli said. “It doesn’t appear there’s a fracture or fractures, which is some sort of miracle if that’s the case. One of the more difficult days you are going to have at the ballpark.”

Farmer laid face down for a few minutes as the Twins’ trainers tended to him, KARE-TV reported. He got to his feet and walked slowly to the dugout with a towel pressed against his face, according to the television station.

Giolito appeared to be concerned as he raised his arms toward his head, the AP reported. He walked from the mound toward home plate to check on Farmer.
