Meet Wyatt Morgan Cooper: CNN’s Anderson Cooper introduces 3-day-old son

CNN’s Anderson Cooper welcomed an extra special guest at the close of Thursday’s televised weekly town hall on the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Viewers were treated to their first glimpses of Wyatt Morgan Cooper, born Monday via a surrogate, and the seasoned anchor’s voice cracked as he made the introduction.

"On Monday, I became a father," Cooper, 52, said. "I've never actually said that before, out loud, and it still kind of astonishes me. I am a dad. I have a son. And I want you to meet him."

Cooper, who is gay, explained in his announcement that his son is the namesake of his own father, who died when he was 10, and that Morgan is a family name on his mother’s side, the late Gloria Vanderbilt.

"I never thought it would be possible to have a child, and I am so grateful for all those who have paved the way, and for the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in my son's birth,” Cooper said, adding, “Most of all, I am eternally grateful to a remarkable surrogate who carried Wyatt, watched over him lovingly, tenderly, and gave birth to him."

Response to Cooper’s news rippled across social media for hours following the announcement.
