The killer whale that was the focus of a heartbreaking video of her swimming with her deceased calf has apparently become a mother once again.
The whale named Tahlequah, or as researchers have named her, J35, gave birth last week, the Whale Research Center said in a news release.
They were seen in a pod in the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Washington state and Vancouver Island, CNN reported.
In 2018, Tahlequah was seen swimming with the remains of her calf which had died shortly after birth. She swam with it, preventing it from sinking, for 17 days, CNN reported.
Researchers called it a “tour of grief”, the “Today” show reported.
The new calf, named J57, appears to be healthy, the research center said in the release.
Researchers knew she was pregnant in February 2019, the “Today” show reported.
