"It is with a very heavy heart that I inform you that my beautiful wife, Kelly, has lost her two-year battle with breast cancer," he captioned a photo of Preston, whom he wed in 1991. "She fought a courageous fight with the love and support of so many."
He went on to thank the doctors and nurses who cared for Preston, as well as her friends and loved ones.
“Kelly’s love and life will always be remembered,” Travolta wrote. “I will be taking some time to be there for my children who have lost their mother, so forgive me in advance if you don’t hear from us for a while.”
Preston, known for her roles in “Jerry Maguire” and “Twins,” is survived by Travolta and their two children, Ella Bleu and Benjamin. The couple’s oldest child, Jett, suffered a seizure and died in 2009, the AP reported.
Fellow celebrities and public figures took to social media to pay tribute to Preston and offer their condolences. Here’s what they were saying:
