MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have arrested and charged a woman with trafficking two girls out of Memphis, Tennessee, according to a press release.
On June 3, the Homewood Police Department in Homewood, Alabama, received information that two girls from California, ages 15 and 16, were the possible victims of human trafficking, WHBQ-TV reported.
Police responded to a hotel in the Oxmoor Road area the located the victims, according to the press release.
The girls were referred to an area victim advocacy agency for assistance.
Homewood police detectives, with the assistance of the FBI, determined the girls had been trafficked from Memphis to Atlanta, then to Homewood.
On Friday, detectives obtained a warrant through the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office on a first-degree human trafficking charge for Marlette Lychelle Smith, 26, of Rome, Georgia.
Smith was taken to the Jefferson County Jail, where she was held on $1 million bond, according to the press release.
