Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes now part owner of Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes II now has a stake in a baseball team.

Mahomes, 24, became the youngest part-owner of a professional sports franchise Tuesday as the Kansas City Royals announced that the NFL’s MVP from the 2018 season is part of the baseball team’s ownership group.

“We are very proud and excited to have Patrick as our partner in the ownership group of this franchise,” John Sherman, the Royals’ chairman, CEO and principal owner, said in a statement. “Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field.”

Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl in 50 years, guiding Kansas City to a 31-20 victory against the San Francisco 49ers.

“I’m honored to become a part owner of the Kansas City Royals,” Mahomes said in a statement. “I love this city and the people of this great town. This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

Sherman is in his first year as the Royals’ principal owner, The Kansas City Star reported. Sherman bought the team from David Glass in November, the newspaper reported. Glass died in January at the age of 84.

Mahomes is the son of former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes, who pitched in more than 300 big-league games. The younger Mahomes was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2014 but decided to stick to football. His godfather, LaTroy Hawkins, pitched in the majors for 21 years.

Earlier this month, Mahomes signed a 10-year extension with the Chiefs. ESPN reported that the deal was worth $450 million through the 2031 season and could be as high as $503 million if certain goals are met.

The youngest person to become a full owner of a professional sports franchise is Robert Pera, who bought the Memphis Grizzlies when he was 34 in 2012.
