Chicago rideshare driver beaten, carjacked after asking passengers not to eat in vehicle

CHICAGO — A rideshare driver in Chicago was beaten and carjacked Wednesday night after he asked his passengers not to eat in his SUV, authorities said.

When his passengers decided to add a stop at a restaurant, the 56-year-old driver accommodated them and added a stop to their route, the Chicago Tribune reported. When they began eating the meals in his orange Ford Escape SUV, the driver spoke up and asked them to stop, the newspaper reported.

According to police, the man and woman began punching the driver, WLS reported. When the driver exited his vehicle, the passengers continued to beat him, the television station reported.

The male passenger then got into the driver’s seat and drove away with the female, WMAQ reported.

Kellie Bartoli, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department, said it was not clear how many times the driver was struck or how long the attack lasted, the Tribune reported.

The driver suffering bruising on his body and face but did not go to an area hospital, WLS reported. Police said no one is in custody.
