JOLIET, Ill. — A Chicago man was arrested Friday after asking police for directions while driving a car he allegedly had stolen moments earlier, authorities said.
Lafayette Moore was arrested by police in Joliet, Illinois, and charged with felony motor vehicle theft along with three traffic violations, according to Will County online court records.
According to a news release, a vehicle was stolen from a gasoline station in Joliet after its owner left it running and unlocked as he went inside the store to buy something, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
A few minutes later, an officer was investigating a crash nearby when Moore allegedly drove up in the stolen vehicle and asked for directions to Interstate 80, the newspaper reported.
The officer gave Moore directions but then realized the vehicle matched the description of the stolen car, police said in the news release.
