A caretaker swindled $9 million from a resident at an Alabama assisted living facility, investigators said.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said Lisa Daugherty, 54, who worked as a care technician, took advantage of a resident at Oak Landing Assisted Living, AL.com reported.
Daugherty was arrested and charged with two counts of financial exploitation of the elderly, prosecutors said. One count is for $8 million in currency, and one is for $1 million in real estate. She was held in jail on a $1 million bond. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $30,000 for each count.
Two other women were also arrested and charged with receiving stolen property in the amount of $600,000. Brooke Crawford, Daugherty’s daughter, and Jerenita Johnson, Daugherty’s former partner, were each being held in jail on a $5,000 bond. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in jail and pay fines up to $30,000.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama referred the case to the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, which carried out the investigation. No other information on the suspects or the investigation has been released.
