GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Bears are coming out of hibernation and they’re hungry. One bear decided wild berries weren’t for going to be enough. Instead, it broke into a cabin in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
The bear burglary was caught on video.
A bear can be seen breaking open a door and coming into the building while two friends who were staying stood inside, WATE reported.
First, Michelle Eberhardt called the owner, who at first, didn’t believe that there was a bear in the cabin. She and her friend also called their husbands, who laughed at them, WBIR reported.
Then the women called the police, WATE reported.
The police chased off not only the one who came in, but three other bears that were waiting on the porch, WATE reported.
Apparently the bears have quite a sweet tooth.
Eberhardt told WATE that the bears took 5 pounds of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, a pound of M&Ms and 2 pounds of Sour Patch Kids.
The animals also were a bit thirsty, taking two beers and two Diet Cokes.
The bears also took off with some allergy medication.
Normally black bears will stay away from humans, but the behavior shows that the bears may have been around humans and had received handouts or found food near a building.
Eberhardt received negative comments on her social media page, saying she was trying to lure the animals, but she said they did not.
“We didn’t do anything to encourage them, and we would never do anything to encourage them. We really respect the wildlife,” Eberhardt told WBIR.
