LOS ANGELES — Baltimore Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith was unharmed after he and his family were robbed at gunpoint at a Los Angeles-area hotel.
The robbery occurred Tuesday night at a hotel after Smith, 32, had arrived at Los Angeles International Airport, WJZ reported.
On Facebook, Smith wrote said his family was followed 40 miles from the airport to their hotel, where they were robbed by three men.
“Tuesday night was one of the scariest nights I’ve been a part of,” Smith wrote in a Facebook post on Friday. “Just a very scary situation and a reminder that people (are) truly hungry and will do anything in this pandemic. Be careful and always watch your surroundings.”
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said Friday that the department did not have a report of the incident, The Baltimore Sun reported.
Smith is a California native and attended Colton High School east of Los Angeles.
“We are aware of the situation involving Jimmy Smith,” the Ravens said in a statement. “We have spoken with Jimmy and he and his family are safe.”
It was unclear if Smith was specifically targeted by the assailant.
Smith has played for the Ravens since being drafted in the first round out of Colorado in 2011, according to The Associated Press. The Ravens re-signed him in late December to a one-year extension through the 2021 season, the Sun reported.
Smith has 14 career interceptions and has returned two picks for touchdowns. He also has one interception in postseason play.
