American Express to fill 1,500 tech jobs by end of 2022

NEW YORK — American Express Co. confirmed Monday it plans to hire about 1,500 people for technology roles before the close of 2022, Bloomberg and Reuters reported.

New York-based AmEx, the biggest U.S. card issuer by purchases, is seeking software engineers, coders and developers to round out staffing “for its sprawling technology arm,” according to Bloomberg.

Year-to-date, the credit card behemoth has onboarded an estimated 3,600 tech employees, a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Meanwhile, AmEx Chief Information Officer Ravi Radhakrishnan told Bloomberg that roughly 60% of the new hires will be based in the United States. Another third of the new hires will take place in India, and the balance will be filled across Europe, he added.

According to a Deloitte report released in February, nearly two-thirds of human-resources professionals cited hiring qualified developers as their biggest recruitment challenge of the year, thrusting AmEx front-and-center of a “raging war for technology talent,” Bloomberg reported.

“It is without a doubt a challenging environment to recruit technical talent. The war for talent is a true consideration,” Radhakrishnan told the news outlet.

By contrast, recession fears have prompted other financial companies to cut expenses and trim payrolls.

For instance, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. is expected to cut jobs starting as early as this month, a source familiar with the plans told Reuters. Meanwhile, financial technology firms such as Robinhood Markets Inc. and mortgage lenders such as loanDepot Inc. have already slashed headcount in 2022, the news outlet reported.

AmEx closed 2021 with 64,000 employees, roughly one-third of whom were based in the United States, Bloomberg reported.
