MONROE, Ga. — A Georgia toddler was found safe after being abducted by her father Saturday in Monroe. The father, who was charged with kidnapping, is also accused of killing the child’s mother, authorities said.
One-year-old Nala Norwood was found safe with her grandmother in Gwinnett County east of Atlanta, WSB-TV reported.
According to a news release from the Monroe Police Department, Gregory Deonte Norwood, 27, was arrested in Newton County at about 1:24 a.m. EDT.
He is charged with kidnapping and murder, according to the release and Walton County online booking records. Other charges are pending, police said.
Monroe Police Department officers arrived at a residence at about 9:30 p.m. EDT Saturday and found the body of the child’s mother, Crystal Hyatt, 31, of Monroe, according to the news release.
A preliminary investigation determined that the suspect was Gregory Norwood and that Nala Norwood had been abducted.
Police tracked Norwood’s 2016 Chevrolet Malibu to a Newton County address, where sheriff’s deputies arrested him. Newton County is about an hour east of the metro Atlanta area.
Gregory Norwood is currently being held at the Walton County Detention Center.
