9 people shot at South Carolina club; no fatalities, police say

FURMAN, S.C. — Authorities said nine people were shot early Sunday in a nightclub in Furman, South Carolina.

It was the second mass shooting in the state within 24 hours. On Saturday, gunfire at the Columbiana Centre mall in Columbia resulted in 14 people being hurt, with nine suffering gunshot wounds.

Update 3:30 p.m. EDT April 17: The shooting occurred at Cara’s Lounge in Furman, South Carolina, WLTX-TV reported, citing the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division. The agency received a request from the Hampton County Sheriff’s Office to lead the investigation.

An “Easter Bash” event that featured music by a disc jockey and exotic dancers was held at the club Saturday, according to a Facebook post promoting the event.

Original report: According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, agents were called in to investigate a club shooting in Hampton County, WLTX-TV reported. The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office asked SLED to handle the investigation, according to WTOC-TV.

Police said the shooting happened in Furman at a club on Ashley Circle Road, WTOC reported.

There were no reported fatalities, The Associated Press reported. The severity of the injuries was unknown as of Sunday afternoon.

South Carolina police on Sunday arrested a 22-year-old man suspected in the shooting at the mall in Columbia. That shooting is also under investigation. Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said Jewayne M. Price, who was one of three people initially detained by authorities as a person of interest, was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, WLTX-TV reported.

Also Sunday morning, 10 people were shot and two juveniles died after gunfire broke out at a party held at an Airbnb in Pittsburgh.
