6 teenagers hospitalized after park shooting near Colorado high school

AURORA, Colo. — Six Colorado teenagers were hospitalized Monday afternoon following a suspected drive-by shooting at Nome Park, the Aurora Police Department confirmed via Twitter.

Update 9:38 p.m. EST Nov. 15: Aurora Chief of Police Vanessa Wilson confirmed to KDVR that one of the six victims was taken into emergency surgery, noting that school resource officers applied a tourniquet to that child while waiting for medical assistance.

All six victims are between the ages of 14 and 18 and students at nearby Aurora Central High School, KUSA reported. Their conditions were not immediately available Monday night.

Meanwhile, Wilson pleaded for the public’s help in identifying the suspects, noting that weapons of varying caliber were used in the assault, the TV station reported.

“I need us all to be outraged by what happened here today,” Wilson said during a Monday afternoon news conference.

Wilson also praised school resource officers, who were the first responders, for rendering life-saving aid to the victims, KUSA reported.

Although the victims have not been identified publicly, police confirmed them as a 14-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl, a 16-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, KDVR reported.

Henry Martinez, who lives across the street from the park, told KUSA that he heard at least 30 gunshots.

“I’m a little shook about this,” Martinez said. “It’s scary hearing that many gunshots going off right in front of your house.”

Meanwhile, Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said in a prepared statement obtained by KDVR that he looks forward to learning what action law enforcement and prosecutors will take to “apprehend and prosecute, to the fullest extent of the law, those responsible for this incident.”

“My prayers are with the injured and their families. … The most important function of government is the protection of its people, and I strongly believe that public safety must always be the top priority for this city,” Coffman added.

Update 4:58 p.m. EST Nov. 15: A sixth victim “self-transported” to the hospital with minor injuries, the Aurora Police Department confirmed.

The sixth victim is 18.

Original report: The victims range in age from 14 to 17, but their conditions were not immediately available, police stated.

Nearby Aurora Central High School was placed on a secure perimeter, not a lock down, following the shooting, the department clarified.

According to police, the identity of the shooter or shooters remains unknown, but that person is no longer on the scene.
