1-year-old boy dies after being struck by car service vehicle in California

NORTH LONG BEACH, Calif. — A 1-year-old boy died Saturday after being struck by the car service vehicle he and his father had just exited at their North Long Beach home.

The pair had just exited the vehicle around 8 p.m. when officers with the Long Beach Police Department said the boy ran in front of the car, KTLA reported.

“As the father and juvenile exited the vehicle, the father became momentarily distracted, and the juvenile ran in front of the vehicle. The driver then pulled away from the curb, failing to see the juvenile in front of the vehicle, and subsequently striking him with a front tire,” police told the TV station.

According to the Long Beach Post, fire personnel performed advanced life-support aid on the boy, who was then transported to an area hospital and listed in critical condition. Police said the boy was later pronounced dead.

The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, authorities told the newspaper.
