HINGHAM, Mass. — One person died and 19 others were injured Monday when a driver crashed an SUV through the front of an Apple Store in Massachusetts, according to officials and WFXT.
Authorities responded around 10:45 a.m. to a report of a vehicle in a building in Hingham, WFXT reported. They found that a black SUV had broken through the glass facade of the store and stopped on the sales floor, leaving multiple people injured, according to the news station.
The driver was in police custody after the crash. It was not immediately clear what led to the incident, though Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz told WFXT that an “active criminal investigation is underway.”
One person, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, WFXT reported. In a statement obtained by the news station, Apple said the victim was “professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the store.”
“We are devastated by the shocking events at Apple Derby Street today and the tragic loss of a professional who was onsite supporting recent construction at the store,” the statement said. “Our hearts go out to our team members and customers who were injured and all of those who were affected by this terrible incident. We are doing everything we can to support our team members and customers at this very difficult time.”
Several other people were taken to hospitals, some with injuries considered life-threatening, according to WFXT.
Dr. Jason Tracy, chief of emergency medicine for South Shore Hospital, told WFXT that 17 people arrived at the hospital’s emergency room with “all types of traumatic injuries.” The injuries included head wounds, low extremity issues and “mangled” limbs, according to the news station.
Lynne Goyuk told WFXT that when the crash happened, “It sounded like a bomb went off.”
“We saw several people who should have sought medical attention, but they wouldn’t go over because they knew other people were critical,” she said.
Authorities continue to investigate.
