HARLEM, N.Y. — The oldest living woman in the United States has died at the age of 114.
Alelia Murphy was born two years after the Wright brothers took to the sky and seven years before the Titanic sank.
Murphy, who lived in Harlem, was born in North Carolina in 1905. Her birthday was confirmed by the Gerontology Research Group based in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
She raised two children on her own after her husband died, WNBC reported.
Now the Gerontology Research Group said the new oldest living American is Hester Ford who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The oldest person in the world is believed to be Kane Tanaka, a 116-year-old Japanese woman who lives on the island of Kyushu, according to the Gerontology Research Group.
