NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Police officers in a Texas city certainly earned their stripes Wednesday.
After corraling a loose zebra in a residential area, New Braunfels police discovered there was a second animal on the run, KSAT-TV reported. The animals escaped from a ranch near the Guadalupe River, according to KTSA. The property was fenced on all sides except the area by the river, and the zebras apparently got free by swimming across the water, the radio station reported.
UPDATE (9:50am Thursday): The second zebra that had escaped its pen has since returned to its property and is fully accounted for, and, we understand, with precautions taken to prevent another escape. NBPD appreciates all those that waited patiently in traffic, called in zebra sightings, and helped spread the word about the missing zebras. -------------- UPDATE (7:42pm): The zebra was safely tranquilized and carefully recovered and is currently being transported back to the ranch where it was raised. We understand that the zebra got loose by swimming across the Guadalupe River and then making a run for it across the city. 🦓🦓PLOT TWIST: There's a second zebra that also escaped at that time and remains missing. If you spot a zebra...call NBPD at 830-221-4100. 🦓🦓 ------------- The zebra is NOT from the Snake Farm. And NBPD is also being assisted by a helicopter team that specializes in safely trapping animals, so you may see a helicopter flying low over the area. ------------- NBPD is currently assisting our Animal Control officers in corralling a zebra that somehow got loose this afternoon and has been making its way across the city. The zebra is currently in the area of N. Grape Ave. Officers have eyes on the zebra and are currently developing a plan to bring the animal in safely.
