The red-tailed hawk is a federally protected species under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which makes it illegal to pursue, hunt, capture or kill the bird without a legal waiver.

The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division was notified by someone who saw the injured bird, according to WVTM-TV.

A member of the Alabama Hawking Association also tried to capture it, but was unsuccessful, WVTM reported.

Wildlife officials said the injured bird was last spotted in the northern part of the state near Hartselle in Morgan County.

They’re asking people to call in if they spot the bird.
