Angelina Jolie-Pitt, award-winning actress, director and special envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, is adding a new role to her resume.
The 40-year-old will join the London School of Economics as a visiting professor at the school’s Center for Women, Peace and Security.
Jolie-Pitt, a well-known humanitarian, will teach students in a master’s degree program for a year.
"I am very encouraged by the creation of this master's program," she said." I hope other academic institutions will follow this example, as it is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women's rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict. I am looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations."
Jolie-Pitt has previously spoken out against female genital mutilation and the violation of women’s rights. She is also a fervent supporter of refugee rights.
She will teach a course with modules such as "Gender and Militarization" and "Gender and Human Rights," the Independent reported.
"It is vital that we broaden the discussion on how to advance women’s rights and end impunity for crimes that disproportionately affect women, such as sexual violence in conflict," Jolie-Pitt said.
Jolie-Pitt will work directly with William Hague, the United Kingdom’s former first secretary of state and leader of the House of Commons. Hague said he is "delighted" that Jolie-Pitt will assume the teaching position, the Independent reported.
"This course will help underpin our work in preventing sexual violence in conflict, developing expertise and research to assist us in tackling the culture of impunity," Hague said. "I look forward to working with the LSE students and my fellow visiting professors."
