That is the most travelers since 2005, according to the AAA news release. Most travelers will drive to their destinations, and AAA said Wednesday afternoon will be the worst time for traffic congestion.
The Thanksgiving travel forecast released by AAA projects that 49.3 million people will drive and 4.45 million people will fly this year.
While AAA notes that gas prices have been fluctuating lately, it says the national average right now is slightly lower than last year's prices, which averaged $2.57 per gallon.
For those flying, AAA notes that the Monday before Thanksgiving is the best day to fly, followed by traveling on Thanksgiving Day.
