Timeline of events in John Edwards scandal

Jan. 2, 2003:  Sen. John Edwards announces his candidacy for the 2004 Democratic presidential nomination.

March 3, 2004:  John Edwards drops out of the race.

Nov. 3, 2004:  Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, is diagnosed with breast cancer.

2006:  Edwards meets videographer Rielle Hunter outside a New York hotel.  A sexual affair ensued.

Dec. 28, 2006:  Edwards announces his candidacy for the 2008 nomination.

July 31, 2007:  Elizabeth and John Edwards celebrate their 30th anniversary at their local Wendy's.

Oct. 10, 2007:  The National Enquirer reports that Edwards engaged in an affair with Hunter.  Edwards along with Hunter denies the allegations.

Dec. 19, 2007:  The National Enquirer reports that Hunter is pregnant and Edwards is the father.  Edwards's former aide, Andrew Young, 41, claims paternity.

Jan. 30, 2008:  Edwards ends his campaign for the Democratic nomination.

Feb. 27, 2008:  Hunter gives birth to Frances Quinn Hunter.

July 21, 2008:  The National Enquirer reports that Edwards visited Hunter at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel.

July 23, 2008:  During a news conference in Houston, Edwards claims "the tabloid trash is full of lies."

Aug. 8, 2008: Edwards admits to having had an affair with Hunter. He denies paternity of her baby.

May 7, 2009:  Elizabeth Edwards appears on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to address her husband's affair.

Aug. 6, 2009:  Rielle Hunter testifies before a grand jury in Raleigh N.C.   The investigation of Edwards' campaign finances is underway.

December 7, 2010:  Elizabeth Edwards dies at age 61 in her North Carolina home from breast cancer complications.

Jan. 21, 2010:  Edwards admits that he is the father of Hunter's daughter. "It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter, and, hopefully, one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," his statement said.

Jun. 3, 2011:  Edwards contains a six count indictment including conspiracy, four counts of illegal campaign contributions and one count of false statements.  He allegedly complied in an illegal conspiracy to support Hunter during the 2008 Democratic primary campaign for president.

Apr 12, 2012:  More than three years after the federal government launched an investigation into the financing of the cover-up of Edwards' affair; jury selection is finally set to begin.

Apr 16, 2012:  Jury selection continues in John Edwards case

Apr 19, 2012:  Jury selection for Edward's case enters final phase. The judge overseeing overseeing the criminal trial has canceled a hearing on whether to quash a subpoena issued to a former speech writer for the two-time presidential candidate.

Apr 23, 2012: Opening arguments start Monday afternoon in Edwards trial.  Prosecutors called the former aide of John Edwards to the witness stand.

Apr 27, 2012: Andrew Young testified for a fifth day in Edwards' trial. He tells the court he felt in danger with Edwards
