POLKTON, N.C. — State agents are investigating allegations of misconduct by multiple correctional officers at a local prison.

A spokeswoman with the Attorney General's office confirmed the investigation at Lanesboro Correctional Institution to Channel 9 on Friday.

She said the prison, which is in Polkton in Anson County, had been under investigation by SBI agents since December, when Anson County District Attorney Reece Saunders requested assistance from state justice officials.

Officials would not comment on how many correctional officers are under scrutiny, or elaborate on the nature of the misconduct.

They also would not answer a Channel 9 inquiry if officers at two other nearby prisons, Browns Creek and the Anson County Correctional Center, were also part of the scope of the investigation.

Despite the SBI investigation starting in December, an NC DOC spokesman told Channel 9 that prison officials only learned of the investigation on Thursday.

He refused to answer any other questions, stating that the prison staff was cooperating with investigators.

Lanesboro was the site of a prison brawl in September 2012, where an inmate was fatally stabbed.

Officials have not said if the brawl is part of the investigation.
