SLED investigating SC police chief accused of exposing himself

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — The police chief of a coastal town in South Carolina has been named in an indecent exposure investigation.

News outlets report 53-year-old Michael Fanning is accused of exposing himself at a bar in Murrells Inlet on Sept. 14. Fanning is the police chief for Pawleys Island.

A report from the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office lists a 23-year-old man as the victim. The report says the man gave a deputy a statement in a hospital parking lot on the night of the alleged incident.

Georgetown County Assistant Sheriff Carter Weaver notified the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby said Friday an agent is investigating.

Fanning's lawyer Joe McCulloch tells The Sun News that his client is cooperating fully with the investigation. He says the allegation is without basis.
