Officials: SC guard in relationship with inmate smuggled contraband into prison

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A guard at a South Carolina prison has been arrested and charged with having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.

The Department of Corrections said Ebonynisha Monique Casby was a guard at the Lieber Correctional Institution in Dorchester County.

Casby is accused of having a sexual relationship with an inmate, helping him smuggle in contraband and bringing a gun into the prison.

She's been charged with conspiracy, misconduct, sexual misconduct with an inmate and illegally carrying a pistol.

Casby had worked for the prison system for about six months when she was arrested Saturday.

An arrest warrant states investigators found a series of pictures and text messages on her phone.

It was not known if she has an attorney yet.
