Swimmers pulled from South Carolina beach twice for sharks

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — People at a popular South Carolina beach were ordered out of the water twice in one day because of shark sightings.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that lifeguards told swimmers to get out of the ocean twice Tuesday.

Mike Wagner with Shore Beach Services says there are frequent shark sightings at Hilton Head Island. But Wagner says there's no reason to be alarmed. He says the fins spotted are usually those of a single, smaller shark like a blacktip.

Shark attacks in Beaufort County are rare. The county gets more than 2 million people visiting the beaches annually, and there have been just 25 attacks in 100 years.

There have been no fatal shark attacks in South Carolina in more than 50 years.
