ROCK HILL, S.C. — The Catawba Indian Nation has closed a bingo operation in Rock Hill.
The tribe said in a release it's closing the bingo hall because of a downturn in sales, "historical sluggish summer sales" and regional gaming competition.
The tribe said it is assessing its two licenses to explore smaller locations.
Catawba Bingo opened in 2014. It was the tribe's second effort in Rock Hill. The original bingo hall opened in 1997 and closed in 2006.
The current hall had more than 150,000 players. The tribe said it generated more than $1.5 million in sales and also generated $1.5 million for the state.
The tribe said the high sales tax and competition from South Carolina Education Lottery scratch cards and the North Carolina lottery were factors in closing.
