Rape Charges Dropped Against Butler HS Football Player

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Charges against Butler High School football player Osvaldo Sombo have been dropped.

Sombo was arrested on Aug. 11 and charged with felony second-degree rape and sexual battery, a little more than a week before Butler's season-opening win against Mount Tabor on Aug. 20, in which Sombo played.

On Aug. 29, Sombo was reassigned to an alternative school within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, effectively removing him from the football team.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders first said they would not have allowed Sombo to play in that Aug. 20 game had they known beforehand of his arrest.

Butler is off to a 4-0 start this season despite playing without their top quarterback recruit Christian LeMay, who decided to forgo his senior season after being suspended for an undisclosed school infraction. LeMay has committed to the University of Georgia for next season.

The Bulldogs completed an undefeated season (15-0) last year and recorded their first 4AA state championship in school history.
